KMC elections by Dec 7, hints CM Suvendu; announces 1100 crores fund for corporation
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday framed charges against Shahjahan Sheikh and three of his close associates in connection with the Sandeshkhali land-grab case. The charge-framing process was completed before the ED's Special Court in Kolkata. According to the agency, the accused allegedly generated income through intimidation of local residents and the illegal occupation of land, with approximately ₹5 crore identified as proceeds of crime.
Along with Shahjahan Sheikh, charges have been framed against Alamgir, Shibprasad Hazra and Didar Box Molla. The case is scheduled to move to the evidentiary stage from July 7, when witness examination is set to begin. Investigators have listed 30 witnesses whose testimonies will form part of the proceedings.
The case traces its origins to investigations linked to the alleged ration distribution scam, during which Shahjahan Sheikh's name first came under scrutiny. In January 2024, ED officials visited his residence to conduct searches. The agency later alleged that its officers were attacked during the operation and were forced to leave the area, after which Shahjahan reportedly went into hiding.
Nearly two months later, Shahjahan Sheikh was arrested by the West Bengal Police. He was subsequently handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation following a court order. While in CBI custody, the ED also arrested him and took him into custody for further investigation. Shahjahan faces allegations including intimidation of local residents in Sandeshkhali, illegal land occupation, corruption linked to fishery-related businesses, and financial irregularities. Following his arrest, he was suspended from the Trinamool Congress for six years.
